List of major AMD Radeon products

Posted on: Posted on

AMD’s Radeon graphics products have evolved significantly since the brand was introduced by ATI (and later acquired by AMD in 2006).

To make this list manageable, it is organized by the major architectural “eras” and product branding transitions.

1. The ATI Era (Pre-2010)

Before AMD fully phased out the ATI name, these were the defining series:

  • Radeon 9000 Series (2002): The legendary 9700 Pro was the first DirectX 9 card and effectively established ATI as a powerhouse.
  • Radeon X Series (2003–2005): Notable for the X800 and X1800 series.
  • Radeon HD 2000–5000 Series (2006–2009): The era where the “Radeon HD” naming convention began. The HD 5870 (Evergreen architecture) was a massive leap in performance.

2. The “Radeon HD” Era (2010–2013)

This era saw AMD refine its branding and focus on the Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture.

  • HD 6000 Series: Refinements of the 5000 series.
  • HD 7000 Series: Introduced the highly durable GCN architecture, which stayed relevant for many years.
  • Radeon R7/R9 200 & 300 Series: A rebranding of GCN cards. The R9 290 and 290X were legendary for their price-to-performance ratio.

3. The “Radeon RX” Era (2016–Present)

This is the current naming convention (RX = Radeon Xtreme).

The Polaris Architecture

  • RX 400 & 500 Series: The RX 480 and RX 580 are arguably the most popular budget cards in gaming history, offering excellent 1080p performance for the price.

The Vega Architecture (High-End/Workstation)

  • RX Vega 56 & 64: AMD’s attempt to compete with high-end NVIDIA cards. They were powerful but power-hungry and hot.

The RDNA Architecture (Modern)

These cards utilize the RDNA architecture, which moved away from the aging GCN design.

  • RX 5000 Series (RDNA 1): Introduced 7nm process technology. The RX 5700 XT was a major competitor to NVIDIA’s RTX 20-series.
  • RX 6000 Series (RDNA 2): A massive leap that brought hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing and “Infinity Cache.”
    • Notable cards: RX 6700 XT, 6800 XT, and the flagship 6950 XT.
  • RX 7000 Series (RDNA 3 – Current): Introduced chiplet design (similar to Ryzen CPUs) and DisplayPort 2.1.
    • Notable cards: RX 7600, 7700 XT, 7800 XT, and the flagship 7900 XTX.

Summary Table: Modern Branding Key

Series Architecture Focus
RX 500 Polaris Budget/1080p entry-level
RX 5000 RDNA 1440p mainstream gaming
RX 6000 RDNA 2 Ray Tracing, High-refresh 1440p/4K
RX 7000 RDNA 3 4K Gaming, Chiplet tech, AI acceleration

Professional/Workstation Lines

It is worth noting that AMD also produces professional cards under the Radeon Pro (formerly FirePro) brand, designed for CAD, 3D rendering, and workstation tasks rather than gaming. These prioritize driver stability and VRAM capacity over raw gaming clock speeds.
